Good and Evil in Fahrenheit 451 What determines who's Good and Evil? Generally, theme is the topic of the story, the theme in Fahrenheit 451 is good and evil coexist. The terms good and evil fluctuate per person depending on their experiences and how they see things. Typically a good person is someone with good or strong morals and an evil person is someone with weak morals. Montag is a prime example of the fluctuation, he sees himself as good but others view him as bad. In Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, the theme is good and evil coexist, which is seen when Montag and Clarisse meet and talk about the leaves, the firemen burn the woman alive, and when Montag is on the run and meets the professors. Good is shown when Montag and Clarisse talk about the leaves. ‘“have you ever smelled old leaves?’” ‘Don't they smell like cinnamon?’” (Bradbury 26). Clarisse represents good throughout the story, but she's also associated with leaves and fall, hence the cinnamon. Another reason I see it as good, it's just a wholesome conversation between the two, especially for Montague because Clarice was one of the only people he generally seems to care about. “‘ why, yes, it is like cinnamon in a way’” (Bradbury 26). “He stood a long time, listening to the warm crackle of the flames” (Bradbury 139). This scene is one of the only parts in the book where fire isn't described as something harmful and destructive. It takes Montag back to his childhood when he was with his mom. ‘“It's alright.’” ‘the voice,” ‘“You're welcome here’” (Bradbury 140). Montag is in a place where he's with people who finally understand what he thinks and her in the same mindset as him. Also, he's in a place where he seems to fit in and belong.
