Individuality vs. Conformity The future is one idea that many authors try to write about, but only a few capture the essence of what society can truly become. Ray Bradbury has created astonishing works about how technology influences people's lives and one’s choices can affect their life. One of his works, a dystopian novel, Fahrenheit 451 is about firefighters who start fires rather than stop them. This novel captures pieces of society that are slowly becoming evident in today's world. Many elements in Fahrenheit 451 shows how one's choice of conformity or individuality can affect their life and the society. Conformity is beginning to have a detrimental effect on the society because everything is the same and it is having a negative impact. Everybody is the same and “they all say the same things and nobody says anything different than anyone else” (31). They do nothing to individualize themselves. People should be different, but the whole society is essentially the same. When people of the society are mad, sad, happy, or bored they all act the same way and do the same things. Very few people do things differently. One person in particular, Clarisse McClellan,“ [goes] out and hikes around in the forest and [watches] the birds” when she has strong emotions (23). She is unique and does “odd” things, and she is very different than the rest of the society. Usually the people who conform to the society’s ideals “like to drive fast when [they] feel that way” or they turn on their huge televisions and distract themselves from what they are feeling (64). These two types of people are what make up the society, but if too many people decide to be conform then it will offset the balance that there should be between individuality and
