At the beginning of “Fahrenheit 451,” Montag is ignorant. He burns books for a living as a firefighter and does not question society. He sees this world as normal and follows as such He even enjoys seeing the burning taking place. His obedience towards society is shown when he is talking to Clarisse about his job: “‘Do you ever read any of the books you burn’ He laughed ‘That’s against the law’ ‘Oh. Of course’ ‘It’s fine work. Monday burn Millay, Wednesday Whiteman. Friday Faultkner, burn ‘em to ashes then burn the ashes. That’s our official slogan’” (5). This quote shows how he does not question himself at all in his work and has never thought twice about what he is doing. This is shown through his relationship with Clarisse. Clarisse makes him question his life in many different ways but one-way especially being with his relationship with his wife: “And suddenly she was so strange he couldn’t believe he knew her at all. He was in someone else’s house, like those other jokes people told of the gentleman, drunk, coming home late at night, entering a wrong room, and bedding with a stranger and getting up early and going to work and neither of them the wiser” (39-40). This quote shows Montag completely questioning who even is his wife. He felt this special connection with Clarisse that he doesn’t at all feel with his wife. This makes him question what he is doing with his life and his wife if he doesn’t feel that positive way toward her. He also is shown questioning his work. For example. “There must be something in the books, things we can’t imagine, to make women stay in a burning house; there must be something there. You don’t stay there for nothing’” (48). This quote shows how much Montag has really changed. Before now he never questioned his work or why he does what he does making this moment completely alter his character. This event even makes Montag question quitting his job which always meant so much to him. This also made him realize everything he has ever done wasn’t by choice but by the influence of his family.
