Three ways the Society in Fahrenheit 451 effects Mildred and Guy’s relationship
In the book Fahrenheit 451, Mildred and Guy Montag are married, and the reasons as to why the relationship suffers is because of Mildred and Guy having different perspectives on the laws of the society, Mildred’s poor character traits, and Mildred’s use with substances. Mildred and Guy having different perspective on the dystopian laws causes suffering in the relationship when Mildred will say things like, ““I’m tired of listening to this junk” to shut Guy down about the laws (Bradbury 65). Communicating is key for a healthy relationship, and Guy receives no opportunity to. “We can’t burn these. I want to look at …show more content…

From this quote, “she ran forward, seized a book and ran toward the kitchen incinerator” (Bradbury 81). Mildred obeying the laws of burning books and feeding into the controlling society, creates a rift in the relationship because Guy does not agree with the law. Mildred and Guy not sharing the same perspectives on the laws of their society is a main theme in this book because it proves each thing one partner says, the other one does not agree with, which causes the relationship to suffer more. For example, in this quote, ““He’ll come in…and burn us and the books!” (Bradbury 82). Mildred is very controlled by the dystopian society, and conforms to the laws. Guy is trying to wake up from the dystopia and encourage others to as well, but Mildred does not see the dangers and acts negligent towards the situation. Due to Mildred and Guy Montag both having complete …show more content…

Mildred takes pills to the point where she forgets the events that happened from the night before. “You took all the pills in your bottle last night.” Guy confronted her about her encounter with substance abuse from the night before, “Oh, I wouldn’t do that” (Bradbury 31). She forgot she overdosed on her pills. This causes suffering to their relationship because, Mildred takes her pills to numb the pain, and continue to live in her “happy”, carefree world, which stresses Guy out. She is blind to reality and the dystopia, and uses her pills to distract herself from it all. Having a wife or husband suffer with substance abuse is not only suffering for that individual, but it also affects the other partner. Guy becomes distressed and confused when Mildred overdoses on her pills. When Mildred overdoses on her pills, it is bad for Guy’s mental health. He worries about Mildred all the time, and wonders if she will overdose again. When Mildred overdoses on her pills, it is clearly bad for her physical and mental health. Mildred’s issue with substance abuse causes suffering to the relationship, with extra stress and sadness to both Guy and
