Argumentative Essay Marji Satrapi wrote Persepolis to show us what was happening in Iran. She did so because of the stereotypes that have been placed on Iranians. Her memoir gives us an inside understanding of the dystopia she lived through. Ray Bradbury wrote Fahrenheit 451 as a warning for our society; it was written in the future because he believed that if we continued in the direction that we were going, we would enter a dystopian society. He wanted to inform people of the dangers of not reading and how knowledge is an important key to our society. While both Satrapi and Bradbury use symbols to deepen our understanding of the significance of corruption in their societies, they contrast their societies in elaborate ways. Satrapi shows in her memoir how people abandon their faith during times of hardship. “Shut up, you” - a sigh! Get out of my life! I never want to see you again!” (Satrapi,70) Marji had just found out that her uncle had been killed. Instead of going to her faith and finding comfort, she yelled at her god and pushed him out of her life completely. We see that she has abandoned her faith because that’s the last time we saw her talk to her God. On the other hand, Bradbury does the complete opposite; he shows how people confide in and reach out to their religion during times of discomfort. The first book Montag took was the Bible. He had memorized the whole thing, found comfort in it, and would reverse the words he had read. “And on either side of the river was there a tree of life, which bare twelve manners of fruits and yielded her fruit mouth; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of nations.” (Bradbury, 158) This is the quote that Montag read in the last part of the novel, and it represents how he finally got his freedom.
