Negative Impacts of Censorship 1.72 billion. That is the number of how many people are affected by censorship on any day (Gaille). About 76% of people in North America have concerns of the Government censoring information through television, radio, books, music, and the internet (“The State of Internet Censorship– Statistics and Trends [Infographic]”). Only 21% of the world population has non censored internet (“The State of Internet Censorship– Statistics and Trends [Infographic]”). Bradbury, the author of Fahrenheit 451, discusses the topic of censorship and the negativity it can bring upon a society.
Imagine a world where free thinking was banned. To some, this would be unimaginable. To some, this is their reality. Nothing can show this reality better than Ray Bradbury’s book, Fahrenheit 451. In his work, the government took away everything they could to prevent their society from thinking freely.

The book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, follows a protagonist named Guy Montag who is a firefighter, yet instead of saving houses from fire (the walls and outside of houses are fireproof) he burns the books inside of houses. This is because in this place books are banned and no one can own them or read them. Though Guy Montag started to get interested in the world around him and he started looking at what is around him more carefully so he soon starts to realize what the government is hiding, by banning books so he starts to share his opinions with others but many people don’t like what he has to say and are open to new ideas. In the dystopian novel, Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury warns us not to base life on entertainment and things, but we already have. Everyday people waste more and more time on entertainment and unnecessary things. United States agencies request for censorship have alarmingly increased in a couple of months. Censorship is used by authors in a multitude of different types of literature to warn the readers of censorship in the world today. Especially seen when Bradbury uses the burning of books to warn the characters of censorship.
Throughout the history of mankind, there have always been two things required to advance. Specifically, these two things require reading and knowledge. In fact, without these things society would not have the capabilities required to advance. This can be seen in the book Fahrenheit 451 written by Ray Bradbury, in which society has banned books, technology is ubiquitous, violence is prevalent, war is ongoing, and individualism is discouraged. Whereas reading and knowledge in that society is seen as insignificant, reading and knowledge are essential for the growth of society because without these things society would fall apart.

If she was a bit more thoughtful she would have told Montag how she felt but in proper sentences. Then, because she would have actually talked to Montag more properly, she could have figured out what happened and maybe they could have found a solution so it wouldn't happen again. Mildred’s role is to show why awareness and literacy are important for communication and life in general. By contrast, Faber can be seen as an opposite of Mildred. Faber is another important character, but unlike most, he shows literacy and is intelligent.
