As Montag learns the truth about society, the theme that a lack of knowledge and over reliance on technology has created an ignorant, unexpressive, and oblivious society is revealed. Montag, like others around him, are victims of a society that creates unexpressive and unintelligent people. Because of the burning of books and discarding of anything that may cause negative emotions, the society in Fahrenheit 451 has devolved into people who are overly reliant on technology to get through the day. This revelation connects to the theme as it reveals that the people in society are oblivious to their surroundings because of technological advances, resulting in bigger billboards to adapt to this change. Later on, after Clarrise’s death, as Montag reveals his collection of books to Mildred, and tries to calm her down, he talks about him trying to understand Clarrise. However, his wife Mildred says “‘She’s dead. Let’s talk about someone alive, for goodness’ sake’”(68). Mildred says this aligns with how everyone else in their society thinks. Selfish and uncaring. People think like this because the government only allows entertainment that does not cause conflict, and is not hard for people to understand. This impacts the people in society because if they lack deep thinking, they will not think about how others feel, and act ignorant. The technology in Fahrenheit 451 is overly relied on to an extreme extent. When Montag tries to tell Mildred about how each book has its own person behind it, she begins to kick “a
