Food Process Issues Consumption There are many issues with the food process today. One of the biggest issues is consumption. Consumption is the biggest issue in my opinion because, it leads to other issues. Some of these issues directly and indirectly related to consumption are health problems, food deserts, and unsustainable agriculture. There are likely more issues directly and indirectly related to the food process issue relating to consumption but, these are my most important, and the ones I feel need to be discussed because of their impact on society. This issue is more of an indirect issue but, is one of the main causes of food deserts. The book Fair Food by Oran B.Hesterman defines a food desert as, "Geographical areas of food imbalance; a place in which the average distance to a full-service grocery store or supermarket is greater than the average distance to a "fringe" location." (Oran B.Hesterman 2012). "Fringe" locations include gas stations, liquor stores, pharmacies, convenience stores, or fast food restaurants. Consumption is a cause of food deserts because, to consume food you have to buy food. Where you buy food from can have big influences on food deserts. If you are buying food at fast food restaurants all the time, rather than shopping at a local farmers markets, local grocery stores, and pretty much any type of local food businesses, then these places will go out of business or no one will want to start a healthy food business in the area. This then causes food deserts, which then results in fringe locations, which then result in unhealthy food being the only option in certain areas, and then consuming these unhealthy foods causes health problems. The book Fair Food also explains how food deserts are becoming more and more prevalent as big companies like Wal-Mart are taking over small grocery stores and economies. (Oran B.Hesterman 2012).
