Stephen Roberts once said “When I was a kid I had an imaginary friend and I used to think that he went everywhere with me, and that I could talk to him and that he could hear me, and that he could grant me wishes and stuff. And then I grew up, and I stopped going to church.” In the book, Night, Elie’s family and thousands of other jews get sent to a concentration camp where they have to survive and fend for themselves. When Moshe the Beadle comes back to Sighet to tell his stories of the camp, Elie and the others think that he is a madman. “I did not believe him myself. I would often sit with him in the evening after the service, listening to his stories and trying my hardest to understand his grief.”(Wiesel;5) This shows that when people believe that everything is going to be fine there is no use of warning them of what is happening going to them. When Elie heard the stories Moshe the Beadle was telling he thought that he was going crazy but he listened and tried to understand all the struggles he went through. This reveals that in order for the people to believe you, they will need to see it for themselves. “Son they keep hitting me! I thought he was delirious. Him, the Frenchman… and the pole… they were hitting me.”(Wiesel;104) This shows that sickness can lead other people to not believe you because they think that everything you say will be made up. This reveals that whatever you say when you’re sick, no one will believe you because they think that you are hallucinating. When Elie hears what his dad says to him, he did not believe him because he thought he was just delirious. In conclusion, sickness and stories that were thought to be untrue are the reasons why people stop believing in what they say to each
