The Berlin Wall had a tremendous impact in Germany’s history. After the World War ll it divided its people into the west side and the east side. No one was ever allowed to cross the wall, 1,000 people died attempting to cross it. Once the wall was knocked down the people of Germany celebrated together. Millions of people crossed to the west side and vice-versa to see their family members again. With all the happiness and people traveling and buying new things stores ended up running out of things and restaurants were always busy. The fall of the wall was a very historical moment in which even the people of berlin started knocking the wall on their own. Kennedy delivered a speech on June 26, 1963 to the West Berlin citizens. In this speech Kennedy announced to the West (free) side of Berlin that he was “proud” to be the “guest of [their] distinguished Mayor.” More importantly though, Kennedy talked about how Freedom does have its difficulties and “democracy is not perfect,” but the free people would never have to put up a wall to keep their people in like the communist side does; the free people would never have to worry about being held in a place against their own will. Kennedy believed that “all free men” no matter where they were from are “free citizens of berlin” and with him being a free man he took pride in the words “Ich bin ein Berliner!” (Kennedy). Kennedy connected with the people of West Berlin, especially with this speech. This was important at the time because the West Side of Berlin needed all the help they could get with keeping their side of the wall free and keeping their people safe from the East side.
