While comparing Colombian and American cultures regarding love, we found that there are a lot of differences and some similarities between them. This was especially true when we analyzed four different aspects. First, the process of falling in love in both countries is not the same. In Colombia, most of girls have to wait for men to invite them to go in a date. It is not usual for a woman to ask a man out. Whereas, in America, it is more common for a woman to set a date with the man she likes. We think that this is because people in America have fewer prejudices about the things women are allowed to do and the things they are not. In other words, Americans are not as sexist as Colombians. For example, when someone wants to break up with his or her romantic partner, this person usually sets a date to explain the other the reasons for the break up. It means that in both countries people usually break up face to face. However, the time someone spends in breaking up with another person in both countries is not the same. Colombians usually need a long talk to break up. However, Americans go straight to the point. They usually break up after a short conversation. This can be explained by the way people think about love and time in Colombia and America. For Americans time is gold. They like to do things in practical manner. They also like to gain something from all the things they do. Love is important for them, but as breaking up is not of benefit to them, they prefer to do it in a fast way. We have heard some cases of Americans who break up through an email or a text message. Colombians are not very worried about time. In addition, they care more about feelings.
