Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare in 1597, presents to us that love is the most powerful, complex and dangerous emotion. The theme of love is the overriding theme in this play and it all begins when Romeo and Juliet first lock eyes with each other. However, their love at first sight lead to a series of an emotional rollercoaster rides throughout the whole play. Yet, it isn’t only Romeo and Juliet’s love that is powerful, complex or dangerous, Juliet and the Nurse, who is Juliet’s surrogate mother and best friend, conveys a different kind of affection between them called familial love. Shakespeare has portrayed love in both positive and negative ways.
The love between Romeo and Juliet is very powerful: “With love’s light wings did I o’er perch these walls; for stony limits cannot hold love out.” Romeo believes that Juliet gives him the strength to ‘fly over the walls’ to be with Juliet. Without his profound feelings for Juliet, Romeo wouldn’t have the courage to overcome the fear of getting caught together by her parents. This caused their relationship to be romantic but also very unpredictable. The power of fate ruled their relationship but also controlled their destiny. Fate plays a massive role in bringing people together but at the same time, tearing them apart. This hidden force is very troublesome for the young pair of star-crossed lovers’ who attempted anything to continue the blossoming of their love. Fate is a very common theme and this is obvious when Romeo is informed about Juliet’s fake death, he declared “Then I defy you, stars.” This means that Romeo is very open to what fate throws at him and will do anything that lets him reunite with Juliet again. Despite that, fate is very strong and cannot be ignored. So inevitably, both teenagers are destined to be
