The Family Crisis Center is located in Asheboro, North Carolina. This organization began in 1978. The goal of this organization is to serve people in crisis from domestic and family violence, sexual assault and rape while working to eliminate those issues in the community. They include many services such as; emergency shelters, 24 hour hot lines, case management, counseling, protective orders, and many more. There is a wonderful staff and many caring volunteers included with this organization. I volunteered at this organization and did many things while I was there. At first I was very nervous to be meeting and creating a positive experience. I was scared that somehow I would do something to ruin any interaction with the children or workers. As the event and day went on, I became more comfortable with these people. I was informed that men generally aren’t allowed to participate in most events because this organization is designed for women and children. These women and children come from abusive relationships where the man was at fault. Many of these families are scared of men because of the torment they were involved with. I eventually felt relaxed and empathy for these families. The stories given by the children were filled with sadness and pain. When the event came to a close, I felt confident knowing that I helped these children because they hugged and cried as we had to part ways. I am not ashamed to say that tears had become normal as the children told me their stories and as I sat in my car reflecting the events of the day. I absolutely loved working and making a difference in these lives. This project has opened my world to the lives of families that has been involved in terrible events. As the days have passed since my time at the event, I think of these children and often think of how many more I could help and impact. This world I have become used to is much different than the world these families are experiencing. Abuse is common in families and some families don’t receive
