The main characters are Lina mayfleet, doon harrow, mayor cole, looper windly, and granny. Lina mayfleet loves to run and hopes to become a messenger and draws about how the outside world might look like, she also must take care of her sister poppy. Doon harrow is serious and usually focusing on important tasks and loves bugs but has anger problems. Mayor cole is a greedy person who hordes all the food supplies of the city and is mean, hypocritical, and abuses power. Looper windly is a sketchy guy and keeps things to himself.

In Anne Petry’s novel, The Street, and Joan Didian’s essay, “Los Angeles Notebook”, the authors both use literary devices to show how adversity can affect people; however, Petry uses imagery of debris, diction that evokes a sense of frustration, and personification that shows the resilience of humans in times of intense, short-term adversity, while Didian uses Imagery that incites an ominous mood, Pathetic fallacy, and syntax that shows how drastically repeated, prolonged adversity can affect people. Petry shows, through the use of imagery, that garbage and debris can symbolize the hardship that each person encounters.
David Laskin’s The Children’s Blizzard explains the devastating force of an intense blizzard, which caught several people unprepared, and it tells the tragic stories of these people. On January 12, 1888 a massive blizzard struck the center of North America, killing between 250 to 500 people and affecting thousands. There were many factors that made this blizzard exceptionally deadly. Many farmers and children who were outside were unprepared to deal with any cold conditions, “a day when children had raced to school with no coats or gloves and farmers were far from home doing chores they had put off during the long siege of cold” (Laskin 2).

The story follows Jurgis Rudkus and his newlywed wife Ona Lukoszaite; moreso Jurgis’s story and how his life turns out in America. Neither Jurgis nor Ona originated in America. Jurgis seems to go through problem after problem in the story, and that is the theme of the story. The story teaches great history on how the United State’s industries used to be.

The literary element irony is mostly used in the short story “What happened during the Ice Storm?” originally the boys wanted to hurt the pheasants like the author says, “They stood over the pheasants, turning their own heads, looking at each other, each expecting the other to do something. To pounce on a pheasant, or to yell Bang!” This quote is important because it showed the boys original intent; which was to hurt or kill the pheasants.
