Family Traditions In Colombia

Many interesting traditions exist currently in Colombia, and as weird as it gets, this one makes part of how we celebrate Christmas here in Colombia. This particular tradition occurs during Christmas eve and it consists of hiding a baby Jesus statue and let a couple of kids complete the task of finding it in order to receive some extra money. The kid who finds it first, gets to keep the money. To begin with, this “ceremony” starts normally at around ten pm, just before reading the “novena” and after having a pleasurable dinner as a family . This basically consists of an adult hiding a baby Jesus statue in the house and let the children look for it. This is essentially a tradition about competition, skills and luck . The goal is to make the kids have more faith and perhaps a more joyful Christmas. And what would be a family tradition without any inconsistencies? There are of course many times were the baby Jesus is never found or adults are lazy and just hand out the money without hiding the baby Jesus at all. This is pretty amusing because by doing this, adults are just teaching kids how to be greedy. Another unfortunate situation would be that the competition is too abrasive and the chance of finding the baby Jesus is almost null. So the point after all is pretty much inculcate faith, not raise some greedy competitive children. To this day, this popular tradition has actually been vanishing and I believe that it will disappear in a couple of years. Well, at least it has decreased its popularity over higher classes as these have developed more sophisticated Christmases.
