Showing off your family's possession to your close friends can turn the tables real fast. In the novel, American Youth, by Phil Lamarche, their is a family living in small town in New England. Suddenly one summer day an extreme incident happens inside their home. Three boys, Ted, Kevin and Bobby, are becoming very bored wandering the streets, when suddenly they decide to go relax at Ted and Kevin's home. After being home for a while, Ted is showing off one of his guns to the boys and eventually teaches them how to load the gun. After Ted shows them the guns, he goes and checks on his mother Donna in the garden. With one quick BAM, Ted regained his focus and noticed his friend Bobby was on the ground holding his chest. There are two ways to describe Ted: enthusiastic and very sad. Ted was always very enthusiastic about the smallest things. At the beginning of the novel, Ted was getting excited about going to a store to buy a soda with his friends. Also, Ted got very excited when his family would go outside and plant stuff in their garden, or just spending time with his family. Despite from his enthusiastic side, Ted is also extremely sad. Ted is extremely sad and angry with himself with the mistake that he made. He is mad at himself for showing off his guns. Although just showing it off isn't the problem, he caused a death inside his home by showing them off. Surprisingly, the very moment that Te went to check on his mother he heard a BAM. Ted immediately ran to the living room where the boys had the gun and saw his friend Bobby laying on the ground holding his chest. The shot caught Donnas attention outside and she knew something was up. She hustled in and Kevin immediately said that he was not done looking at the gun and he pulled it and accidently shot the gun. At the moment td knew he was in deep trouble but that was not the concern, all the attention was on Bobby: “A small bubble of spit rose from Bobby’s lips and bursted. The spot on his chest was near his left nipple” (Lamarche 17). After seeing his friend in immense pain he regretted was he had done and felt extremely sorry for his actions. Later that day Bobby passed away hurting Ted …show more content…
The family will get sued. First, the incident happened at Ted’s house and no one knew that they were there because both parents thought that they were wandering around in the woods. Also, the family is probably even more upset that there wasn't a parent inside when Ted was showing off the guns. Although the main reason I believe they will get sued is the fact that Bobby was shot and ended up dying in there house from act no one was aware of. If a parent was inside and keeping an eye on they boys there would have been no chance of this happening. For those reasons readers can believe Ted’s family will get sued. On the other hand, there are many reasons for them not to get sued. Although Bobby’s mother is very upset with what happened, she knows it was an accident. Also, Ted’s whole family is on board with not saying anything if someone confronts them about the situation: “ If someone asks you just shrug it off, pretend like you don’t know what they’re talking about” (Lamarche). Ted struggles with keeping it quiet at school because everyone knows about the incident, so when he is confronted he just puts his head down and keeps on walking. After all, there are many reasons leading on both sides, but most readers would have to predict that Ted’s family will not get sued.
One simple question can change one's life. This is clearly shown in the story, American Youth, by Phil Lamarche, when Ted secretly
