TKM Theme Essay Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird takes place during the Great Depression in the small town of Maycomb in Alabama. Scout and Jem live in what they think is a good community. From what they know, everyone fits into the community except Boo Radley, a mysterious neighbor. They think this until the trial of Tom Robinson, an African American that is accused a raping a white women, takes place. The kids see something they have never noticed about their community before.
When reading a novel, readers do not often realize that many authors use the same types of characters and symbols. Applying a literary lens to a novels can help readers better understand why a novel was written. A literary theory is, “A term for analyzing, classifying, defining, interpreting, and evaluating literature” (Davidson). When observing a piece of literature with an Archetypal lens analysts can identify these patterns. According to Literary Devices, “In literature, an archetype is a typical character, an action, or a situation that seems to represent universal patterns of human nature” (literarydevices).

Even surface level objects, words, or phrases hold a variety of meanings which develops their significance. Authors often form anything into a symbol, which increases the perplexity of their plots, by developing various meanings and outcomes. Foster, in Chapter 5, discusses the concept of multi-level symbolism in literature by writing, “ in general a symbol can’t be reduced to standing for one thing” (98). Scholars and readers alike often feel as if symbols need to possess only one meaning, yet symbols hold endless connotations. Again, readers often feel as if symbols appear in a clear cut matter and only contain one explicit connotation, even though authors often write with numerous intentions.
Responsibilities and commitments are key things in a person’s life. Some people struggle with accepting the fact that they have to be committed to something and have responsibilities that they need to take care of. In Ernest J Gaines’ novel, A Lesson Before Dying, Grant Wiggins evolves as the story goes on by learning to accept his responsibilities. This wouldn't be possible if the power of literacy, education, and knowledge wasn't a huge drive for the characters. The three themes gave the characters the ability to expose new ideas when they learn to read and write, the ability to find their sense of humanity and to expose themself to the same reality but with a deeper meaning. The power of literacy is a strong theme throughout not only the three books but also African American history.
One of these aspects is the influence that their battles has over the mythology of the Dani people. According to Lévi-Strauss, mythology commonly includes elements of people’s everyday life, and this statement certainly holds true among the Dani people (Lévi-Strauss 2013, 154). After a battle has taken place, the men will sit together recounting the details of their most recent battle. Often times, the stories and details of these battles will be greatly exaggerated. Lévi-Strauss also wrote that storytelling plays an important role among the members of a society (Lévi-Strauss 2013, 151).
