Far Cry 3 Stereotypes

After reviewing the game Far Cry 3 I have concluded that the race representations in the game are very unfair and stereotypical. I have done some research on video games in general and all of the articles that I found point to the same conclusion that representation of race in video games is really bad. The three main critics I will be reflecting on are Ds’s article called Representation: Race, Ethnicity and Gender in Video Games and Video Gaming Culture, Stephen Shoemaker with his article Researcher examines racial and gender representation in top 50 video games.

With things like this there will be games that are exceptions. For example Grand Theft Auto V (Which is a reasonably new game) one of the main characters is black and in Prototype 2 the main character that Is black, even though there are not many main characters that are not white the ones that I have played have been the most enjoyable. Non white characters are more fun to play because it is boring playing the same typical white man and playing a black or Asian man or woman in a game is more exciting and is something new. In Far Cry 3 there are lots of racial stereotypes, there is the one powerful White Man that controls everything on the island (This is starting to feel like a movie or comic book) with all of its residents have dark skin and live a very primitive life. Living in a hand built huts and hunting for their food. On the island there is also the “pirates” which is what the locals call the bad guys and there is a few stereotypes within these “pirates”. All of the “pirates” are black and they have all of the stereotypical traits of a black man. They are loud, not very bright, very rude, messy, act all big and strong and they show off their chest.
