Hemingway’s novel A Farewell to Arms displays the many different qualities of Frederic Henry. Henry’s actions throughout the story help to show how he is as a brave, courteous, and caring man. During the time Henry was at war, he fell for a British nurse, Catherine Barkley. Unfortunately, while on the war front Henry is one of the victims of a bombardment leaving him with a injury. Although Henry becomes injured, his time with Catherine in the hospital was memorable for him. While staying in the hospital, Henry impregnates Catherine, but has to return to the front to continue his role in the war. Going through life threatening events convinced Henry to escape from his duties as a soldier and to be with Catherine as she carries their unborn child. As Henry goes through his life, his actions due to love help display how he is brave, courteous, and caring. …show more content…

While he is facing death in war, for the first time he gets injured by a mortar shell. So Henry goes to a hospital in Milan in the middle of war.Then he is released back to the war and him and his team are stuck on a bridge. And they are afraid it will blow up and Henry says “I’ll go” “ It won’t be minded to blow up one man.” (pg 210) Henry is showing one of his characteristic which is bravery because, he is willing to let himself blow up then let everyone die. Henry wife Catherine is in the hospital for her pregnancy. Catherine is in the hospital in Spain after Henry has escaped from the war to be with her. Then while he is waiting for the nurse to tell him that it is ok for him to come in the room he does this. “The nurse didn’t come out. So after a while i went to the door and opened it very softly and looked in.”(pg 328) Henry actions is the quote is a characteristic of him being caring about his wife.Henry cares so much that he broke a rule of him not suppose to be looking in the room until the nurse told him that it was
