How do you take care of your family? This is how a mother takes care of her family during one of the hardest times in their lives. Farewell to Manzanar is written by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston. This book is about Jeanne’s time in Manzanar and how it affected her life afterwards. In the beginning of the novel Mama is shown to be a kind and patient person, who cares deeply about her family. But she is also anxious when Papa gets taken away and she takes over as the head of the family. Mama is selfless in the book, Farewell to Manzanar, which shows that she cares about her family and will do anything to help them. Mama is a selfless person that cares about her family. Proof of this is “Mama’s first concern now was to keep the family together” (Houston 19). This quote shows that Mama is responsible because when Papa was taken away Mama was more worried about her Family than herself. More evidence of Mama being responsible is this quote “Mama had bought heavy coats for all of us” (Houston22). This tells us that Mama is being responsible for all members of her family because she had lived in a place where it had been cold. And she knows that it is important to stay warm. Another character trait Mama is shown to have is worried. An example of this is “She worried about this constantly. She worried about Papa too.”(Houston 34). This quote shows that Mama is an anxious person. But more importantly it shows us that she is worrying about her family. Another example of Mama being an anxious person is “He and Mama were taking turns sitting with her.” (Houston 74) This quote was taken when Eleanor was giving birth and they were worried that she might die like one of the sisters almost did. This quote shows that even though she was embarrassed about her job she still worked there because she knew she needed to provide for her family. Throughout the book Mama has to learn how to be the main provider and leader of her family, while Papa is away and while he is unemployed. This was difficult for her because previously Papa was the breadwinner of the family and she was a housewife. Mama also had to give up her pride doing things she would not have otherwise, to save Papa’s own
