A career in fashion was never my initial goal, but soon after I started, I knew it was for me. Every chapter of my career in fashion has been written with determination, persistence, a willingness to learn and lofty ambition. Moreover, these traits have been passed down from my parents, have been evident since I began working at 16 and hold true today.
I grew up in a small community that comprised of mostly low-income families. The job market in our area was mostly labour intensive and most of the families married young, started families immediately and had little to no higher education beyond secondary school. My mother and father were no different from the average and my mother’s work seemed to never be done. I negotiated politely but firmly, worked with vendors to resolve shipping issues, cut purchase orders, helped decide the regular assortment and implemented company wide markdowns when necessary. I went above and beyond what most associates are expected to do and studied buying patterns and created in-depth analysis to help make informed decisions about our assortment. I became proficient in business intelligence and my research and recommendations were lauded as intelligent and thoughtful. I also worked with vendors to tighten up margins by changing the packaging of select produce options to reduce costs. Buyers appreciated my ambition and the new packaging options are used there today. Just as I did at Eclipse, I took every opportunity to seek mentorship wherever I could. I started with no experience and ended up consistently exceeding expectations. Soon I was training co-workers with more experience and writing training manuals for entire departments. I learned a lot about the buying process from Giant Tiger but, I knew that I always wanted to work in fashion not
