“To me, clothing is a form of self-expression- there are hints about who you are in what you wear”, Marc Jacobs. The 1920’s were a time for people to abandon traditional styles and emerge into modern trends. The spread of liberation in the 1920s promoted a new era of enlightenment, therefore, giving men, women, and children confidence to express themselves beginning with their clothing style. The style choices they had reflected how their perception of themselves changed. In the 1920s the style was erotic and eccentric. According to Linda Alchin’s article,”The Roaring Twenties,” men wore well-tailored pinstripe suits, silk shirts and handkerchiefs, trilby hats, suspenders, bow ties, black patent leather shoes and spats as a casual outfits. In the article “Women’s Fashion Before the 1920s” by Yelland, women wore fringed beaded flapper dresses with pleats and gathers, short skirts with a hemline above the knee, cloche hats and they wore their hair cut short in a bob. Most men wore tight elegant suits, classic victorian garb, and military jackets to show masculinity (Haskel). All women wore clothes where their bodies were boned and corseted into an hourglass shape, with waists forced into tiny circlets to show class and femininity (Yelland). Children were dressed to be portrayed as sophisticated. This time period was so strict it did not have much happiness or creativeness. It made people feel the need to all be the same and have no self-expression. Since this time era was so conservative people were unable to have self-value and assertion.
