Fat shaming is the act of putting down or believing that one is better than another because of their weight. Although this may seem like bullying at a glance, in reality, fat shaming is a real epidemic that must come to an end. In the very beginning of the movie, the viewers are shown a young Hal in the waiting room with his mother. He is soon called to see his father, Reverend Larson before he passes away. Due to all of the painkillers Reverend Larson is given in the hospital, he’s not exactly himself. He starts off his final words of wisdom with Hal well by telling him to, “never ever settle for average.” However, his words of wisdom quickly take a turn for the worst when he tells a young Hal that he should “find [himself] a classic beauty with a perfect can, and great totties.” Hal replies with a yes sir, and Reverend Larson’s last words are “a hot young tail's what it's all about…hot young tail.” Having witnessed his father’s death, Hal replies teary-eyed, “l'll make you proud, Papa.” The young Hal Larson was traumatized by his father’s death and that traumatizing experience would shape his brain and ultimately his beliefs toward women. Looking at Hal’s traumatic experience as a kid, it’s concludable that he’s not completely to blame as his father opened the floodgates of shallowness with his parting
