“The occupational solidarity within policing contributes to a subculture that generally discourages officers from interfering with the interest of other officers, it also encourages officers to protect other officer and finally it promotes officer aggressiveness” (Reuss- Ianny 1983). In the movie only one officer was concern when this episode
On July 20, 2012, a terrible tragedy had taking place in aurora Colorado inside the century movie theater. This tragedy happened during the midnight screening of the film the dark knight rises which is based off the excerpts of the marvel character batman. A person walked into the theater, exploded tear gas grenades, and used guns to shoot into the audience killing twelve people and injuring 70 others. The person that did this horrible act was a man by the name of James Eagan Holmes, and he was arrested right outside of the century movie theater. Colorado has experienced this type of act before when going through the columbine high school shooting in 1999 but this was the deadliest act of violence since then.
Being that there was such a need to increase law enforcement and the amount of guards in the prison system there was a need to make sure there was enough funding to have enough prisons to avoid the possibility of overcrowding. The bill allocated $9.9 billion, including $7.9 billion to build state prisons for violent offenders, and $1.8 billion to states for jailing criminal illegal immigrant (US Department of Justic,1993). When hearing the conditions of the act one can presume the amount of crime taking place would decrease (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco& Firearms June,16,1996). During the late 1980’s there were many high-profile cases of violent crime that spread rapidly throughout the United States. One example includes The 101 California Street Shooting.
Parents have a larger responsibility over their own youth than the government having a responsibility over all of our youth. According to James Alan Fox in Mass Shootings in America: Moving Beyond Newtown, parents have the biggest responsibility over their kids playing violent video games. “To the extent that youngsters spend endless hours being entertained by violence says more about the lack of parental supervision and control. It isn 't that the entertainment media are so powerful; it is that our other institutions - family, school, religion, and neighborhood - have grown weaker with respect to socializing children…” Fox is trying to get at one thing here, and this is that we may think these violent video games were made to be addicting
Fatal Police Shootings “27 percent of African Americans are killed by the law enforcement” (Cooke 1) most of these are from fatal police shootings. Fatal police shootings have become an epidemic. The majorities of fatal police shootings are justified as homicides or have not been fully investigated. Plenty of cases have been closed due to false accusations. The turning point occurred when Martin Luther King Jr., Rodney King and many more were brutality beaten and or killed by police officers.
Mental illness significantly affects many around the world. In fact, about four-hundred and fifty million people worldwide suffer from one or more of the different known mental illnesses. That is one in every four people. Severe mental health issues such as severe anxiety disorder, antisocial personality disorder, schizophrenia, or sensory perception disorder are illnesses which are common among the people responsible for the numerous mass shootings in America. Many believe the possession of firearms in the hands of the mentally ill are the real cause of mass shootings.
Deadliest shooting occurs at a gay night club in Orlando, critics say it is worse than 9/11. On the night of June 12, 2016, gunman Omar Mateen traveled to the Pulse gay night club with a pistol and assault rifle around 2 a.m. Sunday and started shooting. During the attack, Mateen calls 911 and begins to pledge his allegiance to ISIS. Many people would call this a hate crime but it is deeper and higher than a hate crime when you intentionally took not one person but dozens of lives. Rumor has it, that he had much more going on in life, but when he saw two men kissing it set it him off.
Resolutions are vehemently being sought to protect schools from possible attacks and to objectively eradicate deadly school shootings altogether. Commonly, security officers are placed in schools in hopes that increased surveillance will inhibit violent outbreaks (Crawford and Burns 2016). Mixed evaluations have been found in association with security officers, while some benefits reportedly transpire, experiences of disparaging consequences remain a regrettable reality as well (Crawford and Burns 2016). Additionally, active shooter drills routinely occur at schools across the nation, however, as Jillian Peterson and James Densley report in their CNN article titled, “The Usual Approach to School Security Isn’t Working,” studies indicate that
The rise of Mass shootings in the U.S. In the last 52 years there has been 150 mass shootings in the U.S. In the 50 years before that, their were just 25. In those 52 years 1,077 people were killed. In the year 2017 alone, 112 people were killed.
Thesis 1: Charlton Heston is directly responsible for the large amount of gun ownership in America and is thus responsible for the large amount of gun related violence in America. If he stopped his rallying then gun violence would drop. Response: I disagree with this statement because Charlton Heston only promotes legal ownership of guns, and he does not support any form of violence and only encourages guns be used for self defence.
In recent years, the American public has been continually plagued by mass shootings; events where an individual, or individuals, with access to firearms, open fire on people, committing seemingly nonsensical acts of violence. Compared to other developed countries the United States holds the highest rates of gun violence and mass shootings, both of which are complex issue that affects American regardless of socioeconomic status. Although the definition of a mass shooting varies depending on the organization, the most widely recognized definition is one used by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); as defined by FBI a mass shooting is an incident where at least four persons are killed or injured with a firearm in a random act with little
Informative Speech Going Out with a Bang General Purpose: To inform. Specific purpose: To inform my audience about the causes of school shootings in America. Central Idea: The main causes for school shootings are easy access to guns, mental instability and trauma. INTRODUCTION I. (Attention Getter)
Lately in the United States, one hears of a new act of violence either by police or against police, fairly often. It seems to be reported far more these days, but is it occurring more now than in recent years? With the amount of technology we as a society now hold, where nearly everyone has a device on them at all times that is able to record video, police can always expected to be filmed while on the job or making an arrest. The amount of violence being covered on news media, tends to lead to anti-police sentiment which then also, in some instances, makes police targets of violence themselves. Either way peace and trust needs to be gained on both sides of the badge, and this is an issue that needs to be resolved.
New open carry law will not make Texas college campuses safer Texas government recently passed a new law, Senate Bill 11, which would allow college campus faculty and students to carry a concealed handgun to license holders. Subsequently, this new law will increase the rates of gun related shootings and suicides (Watkins, Matthew, 2015). School shootings are being publicized more due to social media, but they are still very atypical in the United States. Suicide rates will also increase as young adults have more access to firearms. (Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, 2013).
Mass Shootings have been pretty common in the U.S. In the past 30 years or so. According to the Congressional Research Service, there have been 78 mass shootings in the United States since 1983.
