In the novel The Alchemist, finding a person’s destiny is the only obligation in life is the theme discussed throughout the whole story. The protagonist is faced with various challenges that alter his way of thinking. Santiago has his mind set on one goal until a character who significantly changes his point of view on how he judges a human’s existence gets involved. One of the many conflicts Santiago faces is, trusting too quickly. After he gets robbed by whom he first thought was a friend, he is quick to doubt the rest. Another is, his self doubt. Self- esteem took a toll on how he saw himself as a person. He didn’t believe he could do many of the things, he was now doing. Though, never did he think the alchemist’s chosen person would be him. The alchemist was set out to help Santiago find his treasure which was said to be found in the pyramids of Egypt. He knew he had left a woman he loved behind however, he also recognized Fatima would understand the life of a traveler, as she was a woman of the desert. The visions he saw were all part of a plan to meet the alchemist. Every part of what he had gone through helped him find his way to the person who was going to help find his beloved treasure, he so much yearned for. While being faced with the conflict of displaying his talents the alchemist had promised the men, Santiago sought help in where he could access it the most, the desert itself. Desperately in search of help, he was in quest of knowing the ways of the sun, the wind and heaven itself. The communication between Santiago and the desert confused, but at the same time amused the tribesmen. The elements all talked about one topic in which the language of Santiago, was love. Fatima was the first soul that came up in his mind, nevertheless he didn’t want to abandon
