“The Monkey’s Paw” is a short supernatural story, by W.W. Jacobs, published in 1902. The short story teaches people that fate can rule people’s lives and that you don’t want to interfere with it, which is shown through the story’s events, setting, and character interactions. First of all, the events in the story shows that when you mess with fate, terrible things will happen. For example, in the story, Mr. White wished for “two-hundred pounds” to “clear off the house” (Jacobs 55). Later on in the story, they were presented with “ a certain sum as compensation” (Jacobs 93), due to their son’s fatal accident with a machine.
