Father Roles In To Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee

When it comes to father roles in ‘to kill a mockingbird’, the most prominent example is the Atticus finch. In the book, Atticus is a committed father and we can see that throughout the book with how his kids respond to certain situations. Another reason I chose this topic is because we can see the variety of ages, genders and living situations in this book and how fathers impact the development of these characters. We see the contrast in parenting as well, with Bob Ewell and Atticus Finch. Fathers in theory are supposed to provide guidance and love, with or without those factors we see impacting on their community. In this chapter it shows me that Atticus fully takes on and prides himself in the role of protector. Mostly in chapter 11 we see him as a mental protector, as you wouldn't tell a child that they are helping an agitated person through withdrawals. In chapter 15 we see him as a more physical protector when he keeps encouraging Jem to take himself and scout home to get away from the lynch mob. For the disciplinarian role of ‘to kill a mockingbird’ Atticus takes on more of a modern, gentle role of a father. During this time and in this place, child abuse is legal. However, there is no insinuation of Atticus ever putting his hands on his kids, which may be very unusual in Maycomb. The definition of ‘disciplinary’ is a person who believes in or practices disciplinary practice. We see Atticus practice in firm discipline in a more modern way though, as he supports Jem through his impulsive actions and scouts to not hurt herself or others. However, the role of provider for Atticus is what keeps him as his own person, he keeps a roof over his kids heads and is able to maintain Calpurnia as a full time worker.
