When Daniel Patrick Moynihan compiled his report, which became known as the Moynihan Report, in 1965, he coined the term ‘Tangle of Pathology.’ According to Moynihan, this is an intertwined set of negative factors which results in the dismal state of African Americans. The factors include but, are not limited to: fatherlessness, single mother families, criminality, educational failure and teenage pregnancy. The movie, Boyz in the Hood, contains numerous examples of these factors which Moynihan considered in coming up with the expression. At the beginning of film, Tre is being brought up by his mother, Reva. In her conversations with a school official and Tre himself it is revealed to the audience that the boy has a bad temper and often gets into trouble. After his last infraction a decision was made to have the boy go live with his dad based on an agreement which had been made between his mother and himself, but importantly based on his mother's realization that she can only do so much but can’t teach him to be a man since only his father could do that. Darren is revealed to be the one who goes in and out of prison. As a matter of fact, much of the experience that he relates during the movie is based on the times he spent incarcerated. Chris who also sits around with Darren all day is also into to criminal activity and speaks of his brother, who never appears in the movie, as being in prison. Additionally, there is Rocks’ gang, which appears to be drug dealers as Rock showed off a huge amount of money when he wanted to impress upon Ricky that he did not want his football since he was able to purchase many.
