In The Fault In Our Stars, by John Green, Hazel Grace Lancaster is a 16 year old cancer patient who unwillingly falls in love with Augustus Waters. Through their experiences they are able to teach us that when one is heartbroken they tend to realize and learn who they are as individuals. Throughout the book, Hazel feels a variety of pain, whether it be physical or mental. No matter the extremity, she always tried to keep all to herself in order to prevent hurting the feelings of others which, in many cases, made her distant. This caused others to believe Hazel was depressed, which she directly denied listing it as a side effect of dying along with other accusations which she believed fell under the same similar category.
When Augustus Waters entered Hazel’s life, Hazel was not ready for a relationship. She was afraid of falling in love with Augustus and breaking his heart. Hazel did not want to expose her pain to others but only to Augustus, she knew he was worth every arguable cry. Later in the book Augustus losses his life from osteosarcoma. Because of his death, Hazel was forced to deal with this unbearing misery but she realized she had to go through this either way. Having to lose him affected her deeply and she became more aware of who she was and her part in this unfair world. As stated, you are always going to get hurt in your life but it is up to you how you handle and thrive upon it.
