Fear is a powerful emotion that can take control of human reactions without them realizing it. Fear also relates to the classic novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, The fictional TV show Twilight Zone and their episode Monsters are Due on Maple Street by Rod Sterling, and an eye-opening short story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson. All three of these pieces represent the fear that creates cruelty in humans. When humans are afraid, they tend to have clouded judgment, which can lead to terrible decisions with consequences beyond comparison. When a character is engulfed in this fear they start being violent, aggressive, and inhumane. As aforementioned fear that is out of control leads to irrational choices and the evilness in humans. This is very essential because humans should know to control fear otherwise when it gets out of hand. When humans are afraid, it’s easy to get caught up in the moment and lose sight of a goal or rules. This emotion causes chaos and it is very prone to spiral out of control. This is why knowing to keep emotions together is a vital point. Fear is most prevalent in today’s society; it can be seen in various places. For example, whenever kids get asked if they did something unethical they often get terrified of what their parents will say and this often leads to them making an amiss choice and lying about the situation. This clarifies that fear makes humans make rash decisions. This is extremely important to know because occasionally, fear can be a dominant force that controls thoughts and actions. These all exemplify how fear drives humans and eventually leads them to savagery and uncivilized humans. Undoubtedly bringing the darkness out in humans to a point where it’s questionable if they are even sane. For instance In the Lord of the Flies when Simon and Piggy are murdered. This was an introduction to anarchy and Jack was the cause. The fear of the unknown and the fear of death are consequently making them choose horrible choices. The fear drives them to become savages and this can be further proved when they were rescued and they cried tears of grief and not happiness. Showing them how the fear controlled and traumatized them and the darkness humans are capable of. This relates to Monsters Are Due on Maple Street because it also shows how the fear of the unknown makes them impulsive and lose trust in each other. The episode is about a small innocent town losing all power but a single house that recently just moved in still has electricity. The townspeople, not being rational, attack the house out of fear. Showing their true selves and how they were manipulated by fear into violent behavior.
