Lord of the flies and how this book shows how it takes courage to overcome fear. It's demonstrated in many ways. Through different actions with different meanings behind them. The boys were all stuck on an unfamiliar island and did what they had to do to survive. There were many times when the boys ran away from fear, but also many times when they used courage to overcome it. Jack is a great character to show how the theme developed through him. Jack split from the group and went a little crazy and would attack Ralph's group and the killing of Simon (chapter 9). In chapter 9 Jack attacks what he thought was the beast even with the fear of it being bigger and stronger than him. They didn't know what the beast was capable of; they knew nothing about it. Jack had the opportunity to kill the beast and did. When we later find out it wasn't the beast and it was simon. Ralph shows the theme on page 187 when he was hiding from the group because they were out to kill him. Ralph needed to talk to the twins, he showed courage by getting out of his hiding spot and going up to them to talk to them. In the very beginning of the book he took leadership for all of the boys before everyone parted ways.
