Americans have had the ability to vote for a new president every four years. Each president that got elected into office have had similar messages; they wanted America to thrive as a nation, and for people to have the freedoms given by the Constitution. When the millennium changed, several different issues became more prominent in that society. One common issue that has spread from Roosevelt’s time to the 21st century has been the idea of fear. In President Roosevelt’s, The Four Freedoms Speech, and President Obama’s, Welcoming Remarks Speech the idea of fear was the main idea they wanted to convey to their audience. Many people have experienced fear in their lives, whether it was over something small or a life altering event, people have experienced fear from generation to generation. During this President’s term, the nation and President Roosevelt endured several arduous years from the Great Depression to the WWII. Everyone in America felt fear during these times. In the Great Depression era everybody, rich or poor, young and old, man and women were affected from Black Tuesday. Then, the United States got involved in WWII. Families sacrificed their men to protect the country while women started to work and gained money for food to feed their kids. Roosevelt believed that everyone in America needed to hear his message about fear. “This nation has placed its destiny in the hands and heads and hearts of its millions of free men and women; and its faith in freedom under the guidance of God” (Roosevelt 1). He wanted his people to understand that he was there for them and that the Americans action would change the outcome of the events.
