Furthermore, the drawing also represents the characteristics of human nature. This is shown by how the Nazi are carrying weapons and are happy in killing Jews, which represents a human’s capacity to be evil. But Bruno and Shmuel represent the goodness of humans, and that humans have the potential to be kind and caring. Moreover, this drawing also symbolizes the friendship between Shmuel and Bruno; this is shown by the drawing of half of Schmuel’s body and half of Bruno’s Body to make up a person. Bruno and Shmuel exist in two completely different worlds but share a mutual desire for companionship during a difficult and lonely time.
Characters Help Establish a Theme Characters are used to help develop a theme and create a more relatable story. In the book, “Out of the Dust” by Karen Hesse, Billie Jo and her father stay strong through the dust bowl and the death of their family members. Billie Jo and daddy, from “Out of the Dust”, helped to develop the theme that when you’re at the end of the rope, tie a knot and hold on because of how they persevere through their hardships. Daddy shows persistence in how he never lets his sadness overcome him. First, even though his wife was gone, he never stopped digging the pond.
Night is a story written by a Holocaust survivor, Elie Wiesel, and based it off of his own experience during the Holocaust. It is a true story, and it teaches about what everyone did at Auschwitz. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is about Bruno, who is the son of a Commandant. Bruno doesn’t know anything about the Holocaust, and throughout the novel, he questions Auschwitz. He eventually meets Shmuel, who is a Jew on the other side of the fence and tries to tell Bruno what goes on on his side.
Fear is an emotional response created amongst ourselves due to a sense of some sort of danger or threat. Fear is not only something one feels within but is also the root of the change in behavior. When fearing something or someone our first instinct is to hide or flee away from what is causing us to feel that way. As a story progresses the theme is often conveyed regularly and emerges in varied ways. Sometimes a story can have more than one theme portrayed within it. In the story “A&P” there is more than one theme present in the story.
Families being torn apart, being ripped from everything they’ve known growing up and being isolated within a camp where no one truly knows what’s happening to them. That’s what was going on in the life of the Jews during WWII, they were being treated as if they were no longer human, being tossed in concentration camps and given just a number to identify them, completely taking away their self importance. The atrocities that occurred during the Holocaust are being subtly portrayed in the movie “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas,”directed by Mark Herman, a story told from the eyes of an eight year old boy named Bruno and his unlikely friendship with a Jewish boy named Shmuel. The movie tells the story of how a young boy begins to realize what kind of solder his father truly is and what is going on during WWII as his parents had kept him enclosed in this idea that all is well in the world. Through the use of imagery, colors, and pathos Mark Herman successfully portrays the horrors of the Holocaust through the innocent and peculiar friendship of two nine year old boys, Bruno and Shmuel.
Lulu Asselstine Mrs. Olsen LA 8 5 November, 2017 Stereotypes and Perspectives When looking at a bunch of bananas in a grocery store, people tend to choose the perfect spotless bananas, since stereotypically food that is perfect looking, with no flaws, taste better. However, people soon realize that when you start to eat bananas that have more spots and are imperfect they turn out to be sweeter and better. This connects to stereotypes because people who follow stereotyped will always eat the perfect bananas; however, people who choose to look through another perspective can realize that the imperfect bananas are better. This connects to The Outsiders because Ponyboy realizes this after he talks with two Socs, kids from a rival group named Randy and Cherry. In The Outsiders, S.E Hinton presents the idea that teenagers can break through stereotypes if they look at life through another perspective; as shown in the book when Ponyboy starts to talk to Cherry and Randy and realizes the stereotypes about them are false.
Home is where people get comfort, but that’s not the case for Aphonso or just “Zo”. He lives in an unsafe community where there are burglars. When the burglars are at his front doorstep he is terrified. He doesn’t know what to do, but eventually he stands up for himself and fights his fear. In the short story “Fear” by Terry Trueman, Zo, the protagonist, is completely terrified in his house, alone, but he has a spark of confidence to stand up for himself and take action.
To me the best theme in the story is friendship. I believe that every person needs to show friendship to
Shmuel, a Jewish prisoner, and Bruno, the offspring of a Nazi soldier, were searching throughout the concentration camp for Shmuel’s father. While searching, there was no sign of Shmuel's father anywhere. However, a guard tricked the Jews into getting them to take a “shower”. Everyone, even Bruno and Shmuel became excited and unaware. As time went on, the guards led the Jews into a gas chamber, where Bruno and Shmuel were never to be seen again.
There are ones to rely on, who will have people’s backs through thick and thin, and display humanity in every step. The dictionary states, “Humanity is the quality or condition of being human or humane” (“Humanity”). This means people are humans because of the way they react to certain situations. For instance, humans have feelings and characteristics such as compassion, sympathy, consideration, and kindness. People’s feelings toward others mark them apart from all other animals.
