“The only enemy of man is inside him” is a statement which is very applicable to the story. The quote refers the savagery and ruthlessness which is inside of the boys who live on the island. For all of the boys, the beast is the enemy. At first, most of the boys don’t truly believe that the beast existed. However, as the story has progressed Simon points out that the beast is the fear inside of them. The fear, inside of them, is what has caused them to murder and attack each other and commit other savage acts. The first act caused by the fear of the boys was the words of Simon. Simon said, “we are going to have fun on this island”. The ‘fun’ which Simon was referring to was the desire of some of the boys to hunt and crave without considering the rules and norms of society. Most boys except Piggy, who is far more intelligent, only thought of the short-term enjoyment. Their mindset of only considering the ‘short-term enjoyment’ is caused by their fear because of their immaturity as kids. It has given their group an excuse to hunt. They use many unusual ways to try to bait the beast. For example, putting a pig’s head on a stick. Even with their best of efforts, Simon was the one who found the beast. The pig’s head said, “I’m the beast… I’m part of you.” The pig’s head also warns Simon to not interfere with Jack and his gang. This foreshadows that Simon is going to die because he won’t listen to the Pig’s head. This resulted in the death of Simon. His death was caused by him telling all of the boys about the dead parachutist. Simon’s words’ caused most of the boys to be extremely terrified. The internal fear inside of all the boys because of their savagery and mindset is what which caused them to kill
