Fear leads to mass hysteria because people freak out way too much than normal. In The Crucible, everyone started getting way too scared because of a lie that was told. Fear is the leading cause of mass hysteria due to the overreactions of terrified people. In “The Crucible,” the extremely religious lifestyle of the people in Salem led to panic about witchcraft in the village. I believe Abigail could have ended the hysteria. Abigail had lied about the fact that she had nothing to do with witchcraft. She started to blame others in the town for being involved in witchcraft. Reverend Parris questions Abigail about doing witchcraft in the forest with her friends. Abigail is heard talking to Reverend Parris and doesn’t tell him that she had drunk some blood and that she cast a spell to kill Goody Proctor. Abigail could have told the truth and not denied what she had done. If she had told the truth, most of this wouldn’t have happened since the problems were caused by the fact that she lied about the things that she had done. …show more content…
Elizabeth Proctor is found with Mary's poppet and gets accused of harming Abigail by using the poppet for witchcraft. Elizabeth Proctor gets accused by Abigail of witchcraft so she can be with John Proctor. Abigail pretends that Mary Warren has taken the form of a yellow bird and that the bird is going to attack her. Abigail could have said that Mary Warren had put the needle in the poppet so she wouldn’t lose it. Elizabeth Proctor wouldn’t have been blamed if Abigail had told the truth about what was going on with the needle. The bird was just made up and it freaked out everyone so in order not to freak anyone out it could have just been said that it was made up in the first
