Fear. We all just relate to it as being another common emotion that is regularly familiar in everyday life which isn’t much of a problem. But fear has a larger impact on our decisions and actions than we all think. It is powerful in transforming the way people react and act towards certain situations and can be more serious. Fear arises with the threat of physical, emotional, or psychological harm.
In the Early Renaissance, humanism became a popular ideology, originating in France and spreading throughout Europe. As this concept spread, it inspired many philosophers including Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio. Dante was the first of these writers to apply humanistic concepts to his work, which later influenced Petrarch. Petrarch did not use Dante’s work as a source of inspiration, but expressed his admiration towards his lover in the same manner as Dante. In comparison, Boccaccio was inspired by Petrarch, because after being criticized for his faith, Petrarch reassured him in saying that there are alternatives to achieving heaven.
Death, one of the greatest fears of any living creature. Nothing is more frightening than not knowing what will happen, how it will happen, or where the deceased go. All greet death with fear, some may not show it but it is the way humans are. The next hardest thing could quite possibly be dealing with the death of a someone close to you. Some move on and continue their lives without them, Others have a time of mourning and sorrow but eventually move on, and some never move on.
Fear is perhaps the strongest force within humans- something that is an undeniable influence on our decision making process, whether those decisions may be major or minor. This is not only human nature but the nature of animals, too. One of the most common fears among individuals is the fear of dying. But what is it that makes us so fearful? Above all, people worry they will not be remembered by those who they leave behind. However, they not only worry that their memories will be lost over time, but that their beliefs and traditions will be forgotten as well. Throughout their lives, individuals tend to act a certain way to ensure their morals will be carried on, even when they are gone.
It’s only natural to be afraid of the unknown. However, The Book Thief adds irony to this fact, for humans and Death will haunt each other mutually until the end of time.
