The 10th annual Feast of Seven Fishes Festival has expanded to two days and is set to take place this weekend. The Feast of Seven Fishes Festival will bring Italian flavor to historic downtown Fairmont Friday and Saturday. The festival attempts to preserve and celebrate the Italian holiday custom of serving a seafood meal on Christmas Eve in the observance of “La Vigilia,” or the vigil of the Christ child. In North Central West Virginia, the tradition is still alive and Main Street Fairmont currently hosts the event. “Main Street Fairmont has been involved with the Feast from it’s very first year,” said Kate Greene, executive director of Main Street Fairmont. “It was started by Vera Sansalone, the Main Street director at the time, and Bob and Shannon Tinnell. “In years past, we’ve hosted both the school and street festival on the same day, but as both events continue to grow, it seemed like a good idea to give them both the spotlight,” said Greene. “We’re getting a lot of positive feedback on the change. I know I’m excited about the switch — I am always so busy working the street fair that I miss the cooking school.
