Feathers From A Thousand Li Away The author expresses her thoughts on a mother daughter relationship. Amy Tan wants the readers to understand how important a mother-daughter relationship is more than a bond between two people. A relationship between a mother and daughter is a gift. Mothers teach their daughters life lessons, so when they step out into the world on their own they are ready to experience life in a new way. The mothers in The Joy Luck Club don't realize the importance of connecting with their daughters. ¨My mother and I never really understood one another. We translated each other's meanings and I seemed to hear less than what was said, while my mother heard more¨ (37). This quote is a prime example of how this relationship never fully connected. They never got the chance to have that mother-daughter bond that they both strived for. Instead they let their differing opinions get in the way of the true loving nature that these two should of had.
