The United States has been in collaboration with various Iraqi leaders in an effort to create a strong, democratic federal system of government in Iraq. There have been many arguments over what type of democratic government should be instituted in Iraq, whether it should be a federal system, a confederate system, or even a unitary system. This essay will explore these various forms of democracy and highlight the characteristics of Iraq that could make each individual form of government a viable option. Furthermore, this essay will then delve into why the United States is promoting a federal system of government instead of either a confederate system or a unitary system in the government being established for the country of Iraq. In order to understand how the characteristics of Iraq lend themselves to a particular form of government and understand why the United States is promoting a federal system over the others, one must first understand the types of government being discussed in this essay. In a unitary system the government’s power lies completely at the national/ central level rather than at the local or state level. This form of government lies in complete opposition to the Confederate system of government. A unitary system creates a government that promotes national unity with a nation first approach. The central government contains all the power with lower divisions only able to exercise the power given to them by the central government.
