Throughout history, many nations have experimented, tried, and failed at finding the perfect system of government. We have learned from our past mistakes to find the best system of government. While there is not one answer for the best governmental system, Federalism happens to be the best system for the United States. Between the other ideas of a Unitary and a Confederal system, a federal system of government best suits the nation of the United States. Federalism proves to be the best system of government for the United States for a variety of reasons, including that it offers a compromise between the other systems, increases public participation in government elections and allows for citizens to have choice. Before the declaration of independence was written by the thirteen colonies, the colonies were under a unitary system. Being ruled by Great Britain prior to the revolutionary war, colonies had little to no independence from the national government of Great Britain. This system of government proved to be disliked by many colonists who believed that they should have equal representation, leading up to the colonists overthrowing the unitary style of government. After the revolution, the United States implemented the articles of confederation. This created a confederal style of government within the colonies with a weak central government and independent states. Thys style of government proved to be ineffective within the United States. The weak central government proved to create many issues, including states having different currencies, making traveling between states difficult. Citizens can choose who they want to be in charge of their state and their nation based on their participation. Citizens get to choose their elected officials through elections. Additionally, citizens have the choice of where they would like to live within the United States based on federal systems. Each state has unique characteristics from its geography, weather, and government style and values. This combination allows citizens to have the choice on where they want to live based on their values. Citizens are free to move from state to state if they chose.
