LOTR and Loyalty
In LOTR loyalty is important because of how it helps Frodo and his companions throughout their treacherous journey. The book “Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring” by J.R.R Tolkien puts lots of value on the characteristic of loyalty. The Fellowship of the Rings is one of three books in a series that was written by J.R.R. Tolkien. It revolves around the treacherous journey of Frodo Baggins and his friends to eliminate a ring that was given to him by Bilbo Baggins, his uncle. Loyalty is shown in characters in many different instances during the novel. The first character that shows loyalty in the novel is Gandalf. “‘She had already nearly curdled me. Honestly, I nearly tried Bilbo’s ring. I longed to disappear.’ ‘Don’t do that!’ said Gandelf, sitting down. ‘Do be careful of that ring, Frodo! It is partly about that that I have come to say a last word.’”(49). The quote shows many things, including Gandalf's thinking to warn Frodo of the ring's negative qualities. Frodo constantly doubts that he can trust anyone throughout the story, but in many instances, Sam and Merry prove their loyalty and gain his trust. “Sam looked at him unhappily. ‘It all depends on what you want,’ put in Merry. ‘You can trust us to stick to you through thick and thin – to the bitter end. And you can trust us to keep any secret of yours – closer than you keep it yourself. But you cannot trust us to let you face trouble alone and go off without a word.’”(131). Sam and Merry’s loyalty to Frodo helps him through some tough spots during their quest. They prove to him that he can rely on them for anything and everything time and time again. Though this showing of loyalty is timid, there are multiple instances where it's the factor that decides between life and death for Frodo and his
