A fellowship with this community is a duty of honor and truth. When dealing with writing criticism is an important part of improving constantly among yourself and other writers. As the ALA says, " The American Literature Association shall actively encourage fellowship and scholarly interaction among persons interested in American authors, their art, their ideas, and their times." Therefore, constructive criticism is taken as a gold token of fellowship to writers the feedback they receive is sometimes detrimental to their own self-esteem or ego. Creativity still exists in writers; this means that people who preview papers in this association must be open to a range of ideas from absurd to drastically insane. This discourse exists to influence the public with their contributions, as well as most prominently their words. The American Literature Association states, "the ASA exists for educational and charitable purposes, to share the world of literature from honorable authors." This begins with the membership, and in order to write or think like a journalist, biologist, or any other person in the academic field it's essential to become affiliated and conjoined in the community. Learning to write in these discourse communities initially as a child or like an adult learning a second or third language. Therefore, speech activity is required in the community, as an elaborate form of speech as in "written speech. To be a member of this community one must be able to write fluently in the discourse. As Mark Waldo states in his article, "What makes writing good in one discipline certainly does not make it good in another." To add, writing is highly subjective, it is used to redefine broader ideas into a concise meaning or thought but is also used to provoke discovery. The composition theory tells us that writing can be used as a means of discovery an idea which derives from the phrase, "writing to learn" something that flourishes into being able to think more. Some practices include, brainstorming, free writing, journaling, drafting, and revision. All of these ways a writer can contribute their ideas amongst the peers or authors who have the same goal to inspire and inform. As one English teacher and writer Julie Jaeger from Bonita High School states, "English teachers have to not only be good at teaching the universal language but how to manipulate it in a way where you can create more." I value this discourse community because it deals with the language we all deal with the most, and writing can be very self-reflecting for personality
