By overcoming hardship, America has emerged as the world's most powerful nation. However, Americans faced many social and political challenges to get America to where it is today. American women are a vital component of American culture; they go above and beyond daily to accomplish their goals. During this era, women achieved many accomplishments and altered American society for the greater good. Although women have always played a vital part in history, from 1890 to 1920 American women marked the era with their advancements and the transformations of society and politics that are essential to defining American history.
In the period between 1900 and 1920, the federal government and reformers were very successful in bringing social, economic, and political reform to the federal government. While not every aspect of it was successful, the rights of women, fighting against child labor and limiting the control of trusts and monopolies were three distinct successes of that time. Even before the progressive era, women challenged their place and articulated new visions of social, political and economic equality. The progressive era was a turning point for women as organizations evolved fighting for equal rights. Woman began to become very involved in a variety of reform movements.
In the 1920s women succeeded well but not without some struggles. Along the way with 19th amendment being so hard for them gaining the right to vote, women’s roles seeing that there not good enough for other than housework and the fashion or style movement with being able not to express yourself the way you should. The life of Women in the late 1800s. Life for women in the 1800s began to change as they pushed for more rights and equality. Still, men were seen as better than women, this way of thinking pushed women to break out from the limitations imposed on their sex. In the early 1800s women had virtually no rights and ultimately were not seen as people but they rather seen as items of possession, it wasn’t until the late 1800s that women started to gain more rights. The Civil War actually opened opportunities for women to gain more rights, because with many of the men gone to war women were left with the responsibilities that men usually fulfilled during that time period.
There was a demand for manufacturing and soldiers during the war effort that only women could supply because of all of the men serving in the war effort. By defying standard gender roles, women were able to pave the way for women’s rights in American society. The role of women is a prime example of how the lives of Americans were changed during the war. The Homestead Act is a special Act that promoted migration to the western part of US. Public lands were made easily accessible to settlers with a small filing fee in exchange for 160 acres of land to be used for farming. Homesteaders received ownership of the land after continuously residing on the land for five years. Homesteaders also had an alternative of acquiring the land from the government by paying a specified amount per acre, after six months of residency. The Homestead Act resulted in the distribution of million acres of public land (Library of Congress n.p).

Since the eighteenth century, women still try to be equal to men and try to be independent. During the American Revolution, women were dependent on their husband. This meant they had to cook, clean and take care of their children. They were not allowed to do what they wanted.
Women were to take care of their homes and farms. In the Modern Era, there has been a lot of changes. Women are not just servants, home keepers or housewives. They are free to discover who they are and
The Unnamed Woman Up until the 1900’s woman had few rights, thus they relied heavily on men. Women could not vote, they could not own their own property, and very few worked. Women’s jobs were solely to care for children and take care of the home. Women during this time, typically accepted their roles in society and the economy ( “Progressive Era to New Era, 1900-1909”).
The Industrial Revolution in England brought about a major change to women’s roles in society. New job opportunities for women arose as the need for low-cost workers increased, and women could seek employment outside of their homes. There was a drastic change to the societal expectations of women before, during and at the end of the Industrial Revolution, with women being introduced to the workforce and eventually gaining more freedom as individuals. Before the Industrial Revolution, women were expected to remain at home and care for their children.
The economic change of women joining the workforce was the greatest revolution in the last 50 years. Women who were once dependent on men changed the way they viewed life. The greatest thing about this change is the fact that there was little friction involved. Society accepted the change with little conflict, almost welcoming this change in a way. Nearly 46.5% of the current U.S. workforce is women, this is the highest it has ever been.
Marriage, for instance, used to be the only area where women could succeed. Once they were married they became housewives and mothers, only staying home while the husband brought in the only source of income. Nowadays, a woman could be married and have children, but she has the opportunity to bring in an income of her own. She is not limited to being a wife and a mother.
