Portrayal of Female Friendship Female friendship has traditionally been portrayed in a different way on television as compared to the modern age or today’s society. The difference in the portrayal of female friendship is mainly evident on how such friendships have been portrayed from the 1960s to the current state. The portrayal of female friendships in the 1960s was mainly based on the concept of the housewife, which was the dominant ideology of the then society. This ideology was primarily shaped by different media channels such as magazines that were primarily targeted to women. However, the portrayal of female friendship as the housewife soon changed because of the increased dissatisfaction that women stated to feel towards the end of the 1950’s and the beginning of the 1960’s (Lamb, p.1). The dissatisfaction soon developed to become a major national issue that significantly influenced the portrayal of female friendship on the media, especially on television.

As women continued to fight for their rights, the 1960’s was considered as a major period for female emancipation. This contributed to the transformation of women into devoted feminists, which resulted in the emergence of feminine activism in late 1960’s and 1970’s. Feminine activism as portrayed on television was geared toward enabling women to become autonomous and free. Nonetheless, the activism was challenged by immense pressure for women to retain their conventional role as mothers and housewives.
