Have you ever wondered what it means to be a feminist? I’ve always considered myself one but not because I’m a woman. That sounds biased, doesn’t it? However, were you aware of the fact that you don’t necessarily have to be a woman to support feminism? The feminist movement started about 100 plus years ago when a French utopian socialist and philosopher, François Marié Charles Fourier, coined the word feminism in 1837. Fourier was a strong advocate for the women rights. Feminism is a very misunderstood movement, so what is the true definition of it? Based on the majestic Oxford English Dictionary, feminism is the “advocacy of equality of the sexes and the establishment of the political, social, and economic rights of the female sex (‘feminism,n.’). Within the past year’s women have demonstrated how bothered they still are by the inequality between the sexes. There has been a brief history of women’s protests. During Mother’s Day in 1980, the national organization for women (now) gathered 90,000 protesters in Chicago, Illinois to support the equal rights amendment (era).
