Feminist perspective on Family in August: Osage County. Feminist perspectives have reshaped traditional views on family and family’s role within society. They have had a greater influence on the analysis of the family than any other theoretical approach. There are many types of feminist theories (radical, Radical-Libertarian Feminism, Radical-Cultural Feminism, Liberal Feminism, Socialist Feminism, Cultural Feminism, Ecofeminism), but they all tend to agree that women occupy a subordinate position in the family. The presence of feminism is visible throughout the whole film, since the play is predominantly a female cast, and the male roles are minimal or only displayed as antagonist characters. Through the eyes of the feminist literary theory, this film can easily be seen as a negative in regards to positive female interaction and depiction because the examples of mother/daughter theme are very rampant and often aggressive and violent. In fact, all of the female characters are not easy to cheer for because as soon as they showed a sympathetic side, they quickly followed it up with derogatory comments to each other. Violet, being probably the most complex characters of the story, has recently discovered she has mouth cancer and has become addicted to prescription drugs. From the pro-feminist perspective she is very independent character who sees through the lies and mess of people and society. Barbara is also a very strong character, perhaps the most sympathetic one.
