The book Poisonwood Bible, written by Barbara Kingsolver, is about gender roles put on men and women and the oppression of women, in the Congo and in the American culture. This is shown throughout the book when Reverend Nathan Price believed women had to be conservative, and if they were not, God would punish them. Women and young girls do most of the work while men and boys can hunt and play. Both the Congolese and the American culture believe women do not deserve and education. From the time the Price family had landed in the Congo, Nathan Price had portrayed that the Congolese were sinning and needed to be converted.
The changes in gender roles weren’t making everyone happy for examples in the story of The Kingdom of Matthias, Robert Matthews started a religious cult in New York during the 1830’s he came to believe that he was indeed not Robert Matthews, but instead he was Matthias, Prophet of the God of the Jews. Magdalene called Lena Dead embodies second wave feminist and postfeminist ideas by fitting into certain stereotypes while being a secretly strong side character as well. “Magdalene called Lena” is first portrayed in the dramatic first chapter when Robert Smith, a “North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance agent promised to fly from Mercy to the other side of Lake Superior at three o’clock” (19) on Wednesday, February 18, 1931. Her mother “dropped her covered peck basket, spilling red velvet rose petals” (21) upon Robert Smith’s leap to his death. “The wind blew them about, up, down, and into small mounds of snow.”

Throughout this story, the girls’ femininity often gets rejected, often by their society and the society in the Congo, and even by their own father, Nathan Price. Orleanna Price, Nathan’s wife, has lived her life living in her husband’s shadow for years. Orleanna has been conquered by Nathan, in the sense that he overtook her and now controls her.

Biblical scholar and author, Phyllis Trible, in her book Texts of Terror: Literary-Feminist Readings of Biblical Narratives, brings to the forefront the often forgotten tale of Hagar, the Egyptian slave woman, to demonstrate an ulterior method of viewing God, the bible, and religion. However, when examining the letters written by Mary Paul in 1853, the limitations she suffered specifically because of her gender are exposed. In 1853, Mary Paul writes to her father asking his permission for her to join an association called “North American Phalanx”. In her letter, she lists the advantages of joining such association, which include, a better pay, less work, and the privilege to do whatever she sees as fit. Working conditions outside the association were dire, but according to Mary Paul, “at the ‘Phalanx’, it is different, all work there, and all are paid alike both men and women have the same pay and the same work [...] There is more equality in such things according to the work not the sex, you know that men often get more than double the pay for doing the same work that woman do -”
There are several women in Genesis that portray the roles of female characters. The Book of Genesis is essentially a modulation of God’s intentions of males and females. In Genesis, God creates man in his image; noting that man needs a so-called companion, God creates woman. In the Book of Genesis, men and women are equal in that they are children of God, however; men and women are not equal in the sense that women are to attend to men, men are more so dominant than women are. God made woman out of a man, he made woman an attender to man, each contributing to one another and filling what the other is deficient of.
