Fences Cory Maxon Character Analysis

Introduction
In the production “Fences”, Cory is an ambitious young man who has a dream of playing college football. He is the son of his loving parents Troy and Rose Maxson. Cory Maxson is a smart, respectful, ad goal-oriented young man who wants nothing more than the opportunity to chase his dreams. He tries to tell his father about his dreams of playing sports, but he is automatically shut down every time. Unfortunately, his father destroyed his dreams of playing cancelled his interview. He is fairly afraid of his father and feels trapped and unloved.
Personality of the character
The teenage son of Troy and Rose Maxson. A high school senior who receives good grades and is also an outstanding football player who has recruiters who want him to play. He is a …show more content…

Rose even points it out to Troy by saying “He’s just trying to be like you with the sports.” (Rose). Cory attempts multiple times to talk about sports with his father such as baseball, but he constantly shoots him down. It is extremely ironic that he tries to be like his father by playing sports, mainly because this is the issue that tears them apart. Though he tries to be like his father in the beginning, he ends the play trying to escape him. After he left from home, he returned on the day of his father’s funeral wearing a Marine corporal’s uniform. Cory looks as if he’s been through a lot since he was initially kicked out, but he also seems be more mature and grown up. We also learn that he is planning to get married soon. He is definitely on the road to becoming his own man, but he is still haunted by his father. “The whole time I was growing up...living in his house...Papa was like a shadow that followed you everywhere. It weighed on you and sunk into your flesh. It would wrap around you and lay there until you couldn't tell which one was you anymore....I've got to find a way to get rid of that shadow, Mama.”
