Imagine it, six seconds on the clock down by two points, what would you do? Well Pavel Kolobkov knew what to do. He rushed his opponent and tied it up with only two seconds left. Then he held off his opponent and scored six more points to win. I believe Fencing is a great sport that should be more widely taught in the U.S. “What is fencing?” you may ask. Fencing is an elegant, prestigious, and modern sport. Physical ability and a strong mental edge are very important. It requires mental awareness, coordination, strength, balance, dexterity and aerobic fitness. Modern fencing has been called “Physical Chess with the speed of light” Statistics show that only one in four teens are active enough. Fencing is a solution to this, not only is it fun, fencing is great for staying fit, it develops fitness, agility, speed, strength, coordination, balance and timing. Fencing requires quick decision making and helps improve cognitive abilities. Fencing also keeps the brain fast and accurate. Fencing also helps with self defense. Contrary to popular belief you do not need a sword to use it to your advantage. Fencers need to size up their opponent quickly, and this helps a fencer realize when a situation is becoming dangerous. Also when in the fencing stance you can move forwards or backwards while keeping your balance with ease, and still use both hands to fight. And on top of this there are still many things, even if they aren’t as intimidating, that can serve as a sword. Fencing is considered a martial art, and as such form is more important than winning. Also you are taught how to win and lose graciously, at all time it is mandatory to keep your cool and to be sportsmanlike.
