A long time ago things were worse with illnesses such as yellow fever. Today it's picked up better with vaccinations but stuck alone with nothing to hope for back then might of not been the finest option ? Mattie Cook a young girl in the book Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson had dealt with things at the maximum , stuck alone with no hope. In 1793 a big out burst on yellow fever went around causing many to die and many others were very sick. Mattie had to face many challenges along with characters in the book such as her mother, her grandfather, a young toddler Nell and Eliza. In this book Mattie Cook matures along her chaos and problems that she faces. Mattie showed maturity when she chose to take in a orphan. Along the way Mattie discovers a little toddler name Nell. In a corner Mattie finds Nell with a doll all alone. Mattie asks her if she has her mom or dad around. Nell whispers “No there broken .” Nell Not only was Nell stuck alone but with no home. “I need to take Nell to the orphan house . The move I put off, the harder it will be.” (p.182) Mattie ended up taking her along her journey but because of financial reasons Nell needed to go to a orphan house. Mattie took her but surprisingly the orphan house was full. Mattie ended up taking Nell to love and care for. …show more content…

Towards the very end of book Mattie wants to open up a coffeehouse with Eliza. She thought it would be the best to make money for the family or at least what was left . Mattie and Eliza started talking about what was best but at first Eliza wasn’t sure if she wanted to. Thank god she did in the end. “Eliza I want you to be my partner.” (p224) Concluding the book Mattie wants to take things into her own hands which is a good thing. That shows she has grown up. Eliza was very excited to see how she is growing up . Along with her mother . Mattie has grown up thru the book because she wanted to take things into her own
